I started wondering about Manet and photography, which he began using to document and make his own work right around the time he created Olympia. He included a photo of Olympia on the print moodboard he arranged when he painted his Portrait of Emile Zola in 1868. And it turns out several scholars have looked at Manet's work and photos of it in relation to the explosion of visual culture around Manet at the time.
images: Manet's Portrait of Emile Zola, 1868, from the Musée d'Orsay, photographed at the Met; Anatole Louis Godet's albumin print of Manet's Olympia, c. 1865-68, from one of four photo albums Godet made of Manet's work, held by the Bibliotheque national de France.

Pierre Fournier
Tradition: n. f.
Merci monsieur Fournier!

(Edouard) Sire, this is the entrance of His Royal Highness, the Duke Oliver of Rothsey, heir to the kingdom of Scots.
(Napoléon, salutes) Your Royal Highness. (Oliver) Your Imperial Majesty. As a representative of the Scots, but also as a friend, I offer my deepest condolences to you and the Imperial family.
(Napoléon) Thank you. I would like you to attend with my family and myself the imperial mass, after this interview, in honour of my father.
(Oliver) I will be there, of course... If you feel the need, I will be there to help you. It's a real tragedy.
(Napoléon) Francesim will respond forcefully to these attacks, justice and order must reign from now on. I will not bend to the violence of an extremist minority.
(Oliver) I understand your reaction, Your Majesty. As you may have heard, my family has been through a very similar situation in the past⊠About my grandfather, Emperor Henry III (Napoléon, pensive) Indeed, my parents were present during the attack. They often remained evasive on this subject...
(Jean) I particularly remember the event, Sire. Your father, Emperor Napoléon IV, was particularly shocked by the assassination in Pierreland. It marked his reign forever, just as it strengthened his friendship with Emperor David of Pierreland. Our countries will emerge, once again, more united than ever. (Napoléon) I see... Your Royal Highness, have we received any news from Emperor David de Pierreland? (Joachim) Yes, Your Majesty, as well as from various nations: from Her Majesty Queen Viviana of the Kingdom of Iona, but also from Claostein, or the Kingdom of Corrilea... (Napoléon) Good. You can show me all this after the meeting.
(Oliver) His Imperial Majesty, Emperor David of Pierreland, surely has much experience and advice to share with you about recent events. However, my uncle acted in fury, I don't think that's the way to go. I know that you will know how to do the best for the Francesim, Your Majesty.
(Napoléon) Please, Oliver, let's talk about it over lunch. I'm intrigued by the whole thing.

(Jean) Je me souviens particuliÚrement de l'événement, Sire.

Episode 7 Castlevania Nocturne
Spoilerssss ahead
Mostly me talking about how everyone is some form of gay and how that's fun.
Everyone in Castlevania Nocturne is so gay, I love it. (Gay as in like umbrella term). Edouard, Olrox, Drolta is definitely a lesbian or maybe bi. The Messiah Queen is incredibly gay with her new Bram Stoker style vampire wife / consort / whatever you wanna call it in episode 6? Gayest dance ever. The Messiah gives the vibes of Book Carmilla--evil lesbian vampire basically.
Drolta's dress is so fine. And I'm loving Olrox's earrings.
And then Olrox is like "Drolta, I don't give a fuck about your Vampire Messiah Queen." In the middle of Drolta's longass speech and like 50 titles. Olrox fucking hates that queen-of-hearts bitch and you can tell lmao. Olrox does not want to serve her at alll.
Blue is Richter's color 100% and his flames also being blue are a good touch (also because blue flames are hotter than orange / red ones).
Holy shit gasp Olrox is actually straight up helping Richter and Company? I think I love Olrox other than him being super hot.
Damnnn Drolta got a glowup? Which I didn't think was possible given how beautiful she already was, digging the horns and pink fire hair though. The mass of vampires in the sky was a terrifying sequence, good and visually great but also holy shit that's terrifying.
THAT BASTARD. BASTARD Abbott. He deserves a slow and painful death. Maria poured her heart out and he fucking grabs her to use as a sacrifice to a fucking Vampire Queen?? Mizrak coming in clutch to save Maria?

âFaustus: âStay, Mephistopheles, and tell me, what good will my soul do thy lord?â Mephistopheles: âEnlarge his kingdom.'â
â Christopher Marlowe, Dr.Faustus
âIn his book on poor cities of the South, Jeremy Seabrook chronicles the relentless calendar of disaster in Klong Toey, Bangkokâs port slum sandwiched between docks, chemical factories and expressways. In 1989 a chemical explosion poisoned hundreds of residents; two years later a chemical warehouse exploded and left 5,500 residents homeless â many of whom would later die from mysterious illnesses. Fire destroyed 63 homes in 1992, 460 homes in 1993 (also the year of another chemical explosion), and several hundred more in 1994. Thousands of other slums, including some in rich countries, have similar histories to Klong Toey. They suffer from the âgarbage dump syndromeâ: the concentration of toxic industrial activities like metal plating, dyeing, rendering, tanning, battery recycling, casting, vehicle repair, chemical manufacture, and so on, which middle classes would never tolerate in their own districts.
The world usually pays attention to such fatal admixtures of poverty and toxic industry only when they explode with mass casualties; 1984 was the annus horribilus. In February a gasoline pipeline exploded in Cubatao, Sao Pauloâs âPollution Valleyâ, and burned more than 500 people to death in an adjacent favela. Eight months later a Pemex liquefied natural gas plant exploded like an atomic bomb in Mexico Cityâs San Juanico district, killing as many 2,000 poor residents (no accurate count of mortality was ever established).
Less than three weeks after the Mexico City holocaust, the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, released its infamous cloud of deadly methyl isocynate; according to a 2004 study by Amnesty International, 7,000 to 10,000 people perished immediately and another 15,000 died in subsequent years from related illnesses and cancers.â Â
â Mike Davis, 2005, Socialist Review
âYes. As I often tell my students, the way in which you describe a problem, the language and aesthetics that you use to describe the politics of a particular problem, will absolutely effect the type of solution that resolves. { } Ontologically, theyâre already guilty of being criminal whether or not theyâve actually engaged in any criminal behavior at all. I think the figure of innocence (our emphasis on and circulation of it) then obscures the fact that the counterpart to the innocent figure is the person who is guilty of a âstatus crimeâ for just being alive in Gaza, for instance.âÂ
â Mimi Thi Nguyen, in conversation with Leopold Lambert
âHowever, and this is an immense paradox, the great founding books of communities, the Old Testament, the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Chansons de Geste, the Islandic Sagas, the Aeneid,or the African epics, were all books about exile and often about errantry.â
â Edouard Glissant
Exile in antiquity was an exile without deprivation, says Glissant. And this is because it was a voyage from a culture, rather than from a *nation*. The stigma of national identity is the child of Western imperialism, really.
âThe conquered or visited peoples are thus forced into a long and painful quest after an identity whose first task will be opposition to the denaturing process introduced by the conqueror. A tragic variation of a search for identity. For more than two centuries whole populations have had to assert their identity in opposition to the processes of identification or annihilation triggered by these invaders.â
â Edouard Glissant

Round 1b Match 13
Kyoko/Ayaka (Re:Mind)
fic count: 2
"They have 2 stories on AO3. Re:mind features the members of the Jpop girl group Hinatazaka46 and the characters have the same names as the members who play them. Iâm nominating the fictional characters from the show, not the RPF ship."
Char Aznable/Amuro Ray (Universal Century Gundam)
fic count: 178
"They're still a ship even if they have a whole movie about their metaphorical divorce that ends in mutual death just trust me bro. if anything the destruction of their relationship is the main appeal. Interpreting the followup conclusion movie in a gay way strengthens it really because its mostly driven by chars emotional state. And his metaphorical divorce certainly affects his emotional state. These two fought both on opposite sides and the same sides of wars, so they understand eachother better than anyone else could, but the only intimacy they know is violence because this is a setting plagued by conflict, and such conflict has shaped who they are, so of course their relationship starts and ends with them fighting on opposite sides. They do experience some happiness together, though. For a while, while theyre both on the same side, they end up mentoring this one kid together, it's almost like they're his gay dads."
"Also this isn't relevant to anything but I want to impart onto you knowledge about chars name. It isn't his original name, but it is his real name in the sense that if you successfully steal a dudes identity after killing him for atleast a decade Its Just Yours Now. Char is actually his third name. His parents named him casval rem daikun and he was forced to go into hiding under the name edouard mass. His fourth name, that he uses when he and amuro are on the same side, is quattro bajeena. You know, like four vagina. He named himself that. When he stops using the quattro identity he goes back to being char, and like I know the whole killing a dude to get the name thing is technically a retcon, but it's hilarious to me that he took over this guys life so effectively that a) no one noticed and b) its became his default name."
I'm putting this in as well bc the gundam I watched was Gundam Wing/AC and I can't believe that I'm only just now finding out that Quatre Raberba Winner isn't just a bad name, but a bad name this is I guess a reference to an older bad name???? They also reused parts of this backstory for Trowa lmao

If you've read the first Gundam novel and Char's Deleted Affair you might notice that Margaret Ring Blair and Natalie Bianchi share similarities in personality.
Margaret (Gundam Mobile Suit Vol 2 Escalation):
Natalie (Char's Deleted Affair Vol 12) :
Kitazume incorporates novel Char's sudden desire to have a child with Margaret into Char's Deleted Affair with Natalie. Except this time it's a more natural and seamless progression whereby Char and Natalie conceive by accident.
Margaret (Gundam Mobile Suit Vol 2 Escalation):
Margaret (Gundam Mobile Suit Vol 3 Confrontation) :
Natalie (Char's Deleted Affair Vol 14):
I only used a couple of snippets from the novel and manga to illustrate the similarities between the two and to paint a general idea of what Kitazume wanted to portray. It's better to read the whole novel and the manga to get the general idea.
In my opinion this debunks those silly criticisms i occasionally see about CDA that Char getting his love interest pregnant is out of character or contrived when in reality Kitazume knew what he was doing when he took this small thing Tomino put in the novel and developed it further
And lastly when i read Beltorchika's Children it clicked for me when Beltorchika gets pregnant with Amuro's child and mentions that this will give him an advantage over Char. It somehow fits thematically.

you might be seeing me say that i'm not actually attracted to 2d characters and remembering all the times i've made posts abt such and such being hot or wanting to rail char aznable and i would like to clarify that 1) there are other factors like voice and demeanor at play . if ppl can call book characters attractive i can call anime girls attractive 2) when i saw it i'm indicating a specific kind of aesthetic attraction which makes me think 'yeah they'd be hot irl' and 3) if is say i want to rail char aznable or any other random example like quattro bajeena or casval rem daikun or edouard mass or whoever maybe i'm thinking abt the narrative implications of this hypothetical character getting railed . maybe i'm thinking abt how (random example) the events of an entire movie released in 1988 were caused by the character and another random example character amuro ray's dead bedroom and ik damn well he likes brunette boys who are shorter than him and ik damn well amuro doesn't bottom and the insufferably smug way he acts it'd be fascinating to see him pinned down put in his goddamn place to see if she shuts up and
